What it tells you

Rory tries to cram four books into her backpack: one for the bus, a backup in case she isn't in the mood for biography, one for lunch, and Eudora Welty on standby. That's a reading plan with a contingency plan. It fits in the bag about as well as Rory fits in with the Puffs.

Top to bottom

1Savage Beauty

Nancy Milford · 2001 · biography

Nancy Milford spent about thirty years on this biography of Edna St. Vincent Millay, who won the 1923 Pulitzer for poetry and wrote the original candle that burns at both ends. It's the bus book, so Rory's bus rides are apparently long.

2The Sound and the Fury

William Faulkner · 1929 · novel

Faulkner's 1929 novel opens inside Benjy Compson's head, where the timeline jumps without warning. It's Rory's fallback in case biography feels heavy, which is the first time anyone has called Faulkner the light option.

3The Last Empire

Gore Vidal · 2001 · essays

Gore Vidal's essays from 1992 to 2000, published in 2001 and packed with shots at Washington. It's her lunch book, which is a lot of Vidal to take with a sandwich.
