What it tells you
Over the picnic Jess bought at the basket auction, he and Rory argue about Ayn Rand and land on a trade. She'll give Hemingway another shot if he gives Rand one. Dean paid for none of this, which is the real plot of the episode.

The book
The Fountainhead
Ayn Rand · 1943 · novel
Rand's 1943 novel stars an architect who would rather dynamite his own building than see it compromised, and twelve publishers turned it down. Jess agreeing to read it for Rory is the closest he comes to compromise all season.
