The marshal reads Chester Himes
US Marshal · Marshals' transport back to Seagate
The season ends with Luke in the custody of US Marshals, headed back to Seagate, and one of them is reading Chester Himes's The Heat's On. Luke recognizes it, and the two of them end up talking crime fiction, down to whether Luke has read Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels. Eleven episodes after the argument in Pop's chair, the season closes on another one, this time on the way back to prison.

The Heat's On
Chester Himes published The Heat's On in 1966, one of his Harlem detective novels starring Coffin Ed Johnson and Grave Digger Jones, written while he was living in France. It became the 1972 film Come Back, Charleston Blue. Luke Cage made his comic book debut that same year, so the marshal is reading the competition.
