Luke reads Coates
Luke Cage (Mike Colter)
Season two opens with Luke famous all over Harlem, and the book in his hands is Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me. (The Luke Cage Syllabus caught it in the premiere.) Coates's book is about the danger of living in a Black body in America. Luke is the one man in Harlem who's bulletproof, and he's still reading it.

The book

Between the World and Me
Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote it as a letter to his 15-year-old son, Samori, and it won the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction. Toni Morrison's blurb said he filled the intellectual void James Baldwin left. Morrison turns up later this season too, in Mariah's hands, so the show takes her recommendations seriously.
