Charcoal Joe on the couch
Luke Cage (Mike Colter) · On the couch with Claire Temple
Same episode, Luke is on the couch with Claire Temple when he closes Walter Mosley's Charcoal Joe. A season earlier he was reading Little Green in Pop's chair. That's two Easy Rawlins novels published three years apart, which makes Luke a series reader. He skipped Rose Gold, the 2014 book in between, and nobody on the show calls him on it.

The book
Charcoal Joe
Walter Mosley's 2016 novel is the fourteenth Easy Rawlins book, set in 1968 with Easy running a detective agency of his own. Mosley was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America the same year. Easy finally has a license and an office, which is more paperwork than Luke has ever done for the same work.
