Luke's bedside pile
Luke Cage (Mike Colter) · Luke's room
Episode one puts Luke on the edge of his bed with a pile of books, and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man is the one he picks up. Next to it sits New York State's official report on the 1971 Attica uprising, a heavy choice for a man who escaped from prison himself. Then there's Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, a whole book about how much of success comes down to circumstance. Luke spends season one trying not to be noticed, and the first book he reaches for is narrated by a man nobody sees.

1Invisible Man
Ralph Ellison's 1952 novel won the National Book Award the next year, and it was the only novel he published in his lifetime. Its narrator lives in a basement lit by 1,369 light bulbs, wired off the city's power without paying for any of it. Luke sweeps hair at Pop's and washes dishes at night to stay off the grid, which is the budget version of the same plan.

2Attica: The Official Report of the New York State Special Commission on Attica
The New York State Special Commission on Attica released this report in 1972, a year after the four-day uprising. It called the state police assault that ended it the bloodiest one-day encounter between Americans since the Civil War, apart from the Indian massacres of the late 1800s. Luke keeps it by the bed, and his own story starts inside Seagate, the show's prison.

3Outliers
Malcolm Gladwell's 2008 book is the one that made the 10,000-hour rule famous. Its argument is that where and when you were born shapes success as much as talent does. Luke got his strength from an experiment at Seagate, which makes him the rare case where circumstance did all the work.
