Opening titles, next to the medals and weapons: Once an Eagle

Every episode opens on this shelf, next to Reece’s medals and weapons, which tells you where the writers rank it. Once an Eagle is required reading for West Point cadets, and in Dark Wolf Reece hands Ben Edwards his third copy. Ben still hasn’t finished it. Sun Tzu made the cut too, because no one has ever built a military bookshelf without him.

James Reece

Quoted: The Book of Job

Over a drink, the man helping Reece trace the money says he keeps thinking of Job and wonders if this is some bet with the devil to see whether they can break him. They never broke Job, he says. Reece answers that they're getting pretty damn close with him. Job loses his children and his fortune, keeps the faith, and gets his fortune back twice over. Reece is working on a different ending, and it has names on it.

Mike Tedesco

Quoted: Flowers for Algernon

Katie asks Dr. Mike Tedesco why he went after Alzheimer's, since she found no family history. His answer is Flowers for Algernon, read in undergrad, and the thought of losing yourself became a waking nightmare. Daniel Keyes' novel follows a man whose intelligence soars after an experimental surgery and then slips away. Tedesco's own experimental drug is the reason Reece can't trust his own head, so the book left an impression, just the wrong one.

The stack on Danreb's desk: Savage Son

Danreb works out of a cramped CIA office buried in paperwork, and in "Fathers and Sons," the season 2 finale, he's the one with the answers Reece has been chasing all season. Savage Son, Jack Carr's third Reece novel, is on his desk while he gives them. The pile across the desk reads like Carr's own reading list: Stephen Hunter's I, Sniper, a second Hunter spine we can't make out, and Vince Flynn's Total Power. Prime Video hasn't renewed the show for a third season yet. The prop department didn't wait.
