What it tells you

Danreb works out of a cramped CIA office buried in paperwork, and in "Fathers and Sons," the season 2 finale, he's the one with the answers Reece has been chasing all season. Savage Son, Jack Carr's third Reece novel, is on his desk while he gives them. The pile across the desk reads like Carr's own reading list: Stephen Hunter's I, Sniper, a second Hunter spine we can't make out, and Vince Flynn's Total Power. Prime Video hasn't renewed the show for a third season yet. The prop department didn't wait.

Danreb tells Reece why the Zharkovs care so much about him: Tom Reece's unit killed Viktor Zharkov on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in 1972, and Oliver Grey was pulling that file back in the '90s. In Savage Son, Grey hires the Zharkovs to finish the job, and the back half is a manhunt on Medny Island with Reece and Raife as the game. The finale ends with Reece finally going in to treat his tumor. The novel opens with him recovering from brain surgery in Montana. I, Sniper fits the room too: Hunter's sniper is modeled on a Vietnam legend, and Danreb has just dug up a Vietnam operation from 1972.

Total Power

The reverse angle, with Reece across the desk. The pile by the lamp is two Stephen Hunter spines, I, Sniper on top and a second one we can't make out, sitting on Vince Flynn's Total Power. Carr has named both writers as influences, which makes Danreb's reading pile look a lot like Carr's.

2I, Sniper

Stephen Hunter · 2009 · novel

Stephen Hunter's 2009 Bob Lee Swagger novel. Swagger sets out to clear Carl Hitchcock, a famous Marine sniper blamed for a string of killings, whom Hunter based on Vietnam legend Carlos Hathcock. Carr says Hunter still inspires him, which explains the spine.

3Total Power

Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills · 2020 · novel

A Mitch Rapp novel, written by Kyle Mills after Vince Flynn died in 2013. Carr calls Flynn one of his personal heroes, so this copy is less set dressing and more a thank-you note. It sits under two Stephen Hunter spines, and Carr says Hunter still inspires him.
