Eliza's first pick for Noa: Selected Poems
Eliza Perash (Rona-Lee Shimon) · Book stall, Budapest

Shopping for a send-off gift for Noa, who is about to start her service in the IDF, Eliza picks up Yeats at a book stall in Budapest and quotes "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death." Ben makes the case for Wilfred Owen instead. Yeats wrote about the First World War as a civilian. Owen wrote about it from the trenches and died a week before the Armistice, which is a hard argument to beat.

Selected Poems
Yeats won the 1923 Nobel Prize in Literature. The airman is Robert Gregory, a friend's son shot down over Italy in 1918, and the poem has him say "Those that I fight I do not hate, those that I guard I do not love." Lovely poem. Strange thing to pack for basic training.
